Is Escorting Legal in the UK? A Plain Guide
Paying for an adult's time is legal in England and Wales, but several related activities are not. Here is the plain version.
The short answer
In England and Wales, paying an adult for their time and company is legal, and so is selling sexual services between consenting adults. However, many of the activities around it are criminal offences. This is a general summary and not legal advice, so please speak to a solicitor if you have a specific question.
What is against the law
It is an offence to pay for sexual services from anyone under 18. It is also an offence to pay for sexual services from someone who has been subjected to force, threats or deception by another person, and that applies even if you did not know. Soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling, keeping a brothel and controlling someone's work for gain are all offences too.
Northern Ireland and Scotland
The law is not the same across the UK. In Northern Ireland, paying for sexual services has been illegal since 2015. Scotland has its own laws, so check the position there rather than assuming it matches England.
