What Is an Escort? Meaning, and What an Escort Does
The plain meaning of the word, what an escort actually does on a booking, how it differs from other terms, and how it works in London.
The meaning of the word
An escort is a person you pay to spend time with you. The time is the product: an evening at dinner, a few hours in a hotel, a weekend away. What happens during that time is agreed between two adults, and in London it is legal to book, legal to provide and arranged openly through agencies and personal websites.
The word started as a polite one, somebody who accompanies you, and it still means that. Escorts go to dinners, parties, theatre and business events as company. The private side of a booking is part of what most clients want, but it is not the definition, and a good escort is just as happy to spend three hours talking over a tasting menu.
What an escort actually does
She arrives when agreed, dressed for where you are going, and gives you her full attention for the time you booked. On an incall you visit her private apartment; on an outcall she comes to your hotel or home. Most bookings in London are an hour or two in a hotel, with dinner dates and overnights for clients who want more of an evening.
What she does and does not do is on her profile, in a list of services and limits she wrote herself. She can decline anything on the day, and you can end the booking at any point. Everything else, from conversation to how the evening is paced, she reads from you.
Escort, call girl, courtesan, sugar baby
Call girl is an older word for the same thing, from the days when bookings were made by telephone, and it survives in search boxes more than in conversation. Courtesan is the romantic version, usually meaning a high class escort who keeps a small number of regular clients. Sugar baby is different: an ongoing arrangement with one person, paid for by allowance and gifts rather than by the hour.
Prostitute is the legal term you will see in the statutes, and it covers anyone paid for sex. The practical difference with an escort is the setting: appointments made in advance, time rather than an act, and in most cases an agency or a personal website in between.
How it works in London
You choose a lady from an agency gallery or an independent website, call or message with a time and a place, and the booking is confirmed in a few minutes. Payment is in cash or by transfer at the start of the meeting, and the rate on her profile is for her time. Outcall rates do not include travel: a taxi fare is added by distance, agreed before she sets off.
An agency like ours answers the phone, has met every lady in person, checked her photos and keeps her number private. Independent ladies do all of that themselves, which works well when the lady is genuine and badly when she is not. Our guides on booking, screening and avoiding scams cover the rest.
Is it legal?
Yes. Paying an adult for her time and company is legal in England and Wales, and so is working as an escort and running an agency. The law is aimed at street soliciting, brothels, kerb crawling and anyone who controls or exploits another person. Our guide to the law sets it out in plain words.
